The Rainbow Centre, based in Scarborough, has opened a foodbank in Filey which they hope will make a big impact on the town.
Based at Filey Methodist Church on Union Street, the foodbank will open on Tuesday 30 July 2024 and will be offering support to anyone who is in crisis, vulnerable or struggling to cope.
Jo Laking, CEO of the Rainbow Centre explains “We decided to open another foodbank, because the need for support is ever increasing and Filey needed to have something in place where people can receive support with food and advice.
As is the case for many residents in areas across the UK, there are people, especially families, in Filey who really need the extra support This foodbank will give them access to emergency food parcels, as well as support to access other services to help them through their crisis.
“There is a big demand for help. The cost of everyday living is very real with many people in a desperate situation” explains Jo. The number of people accessing our foodbank in Scarborough is increasing with some travelling from Filey to access our service.”
Funded by North Yorkshire Council, not only has Filey Foodbank been given a home by Filey Methodist Church but it has also been supported by Filey Lions and the former Filey Community Fridge who have generously donated fridges, freezers and equipment.
Jo says “We are overwhelmed and extremely grateful forthe amount of support we’ve received to help us get Filey Foodbank up and running. We wouldn’t be able to operate without the kindness and generosity of the local organisations, so we thank them from the bottom of our heart.
The foodbank is looking to recruit volunteers to support staff with its running. Jo says “we are looking for people to be the welcoming face of the food bank, to enjoy meeting people and be friendly and caring while supporting those in crisis.
